WHAT IS SCLEROTHERAPY?

Sclerotherapy is an effective, safe, and easy way to eliminate visible surface veins. It consists of a series of injections, performed by either the physician or the nurse. Medication is introduced into a vein to fibrose and eventually dissolve it.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT MY FIRST VISIT?

At your first visit, you will be given a form to complete, outlining your medical history. Our nurse will bring you into the examination-treatment area where she will transcribe the information and take your vital signs. The doctor will perform a thorough examination of your problem, and if needed, will initiate a diagnostic investigation. You will then be informed of the treatment required to improve your condition. Please do not hesitate to ask questions of any of our staff members.

Remember - we are here to help you.

HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?

Sclerotherapy involves a series of injection treatments scheduled in two-week intervals.

At your first visit, the doctor will indicate the number of sessions you will need. Each treatment requires only 10 to 15 minutes of the patient's time.

The receptionist will give you an appointment at a convenient time for your subsequent visits. After completion of your treatment, we recommend a six-month check-up. If you cannot make your appointment, we understand, but we would appreciate 24 hours notice

WHAT SIDE EFFECTS ARE THERE?

Bruising may occur following injections. This is normal. This should totally disappear within one to two weeks. Tiny red spots may also occur at the injection site. Do not be alarmed, they will also disappear within three to four weeks.

Occasionally a tender cord may be felt along the area of a treated vein. Do not worry. This is not phlebitis. It is simply the vein closing. It will disappear, and so will the varicose vein. To relieve discomfort, exercise abundantly and apply warm wet compresses.

In rare instances, the skin remains darker along a treated vein, although in most cases, it will slowly regain its normal pigmentation. Some spots may become permanent. Ask our doctors about it.

ARE THERE COMPLICATIONS?

Despite our detailed history and examination, there is always the possibility of an allergic reaction. This rare complication may range from a slight tingling sensation with red blotches on the skin to an anaphylactic reaction. Exceptionally rare cases of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolus have been reported in medical literature. Also there are two other RARE accidental complication that may arise from the sclerosing agent spilling into the subcutaneous tissues, or introduced into an arteriole. Both will result in an ulcer that will eventually leave a scar. At the slightest sign of irregularity, do not hesitate to call the clinic. The receptionist will relay your message to a doctor or nurse who will return your call as soon as possible.

WHAT OTHER TREATMENTS MAY BE REQUIRED FOR LEG PAINS,
VARICOSE VEINS, AND SPIDER VEINS (TELANGIECTASIAS)?

Compression Support stockings, which are now available in a variety of styles and fashion colors, are recommended. They compress the lower leg and thus lessen the swelling and the formation of new varicose veins. At your first visit, the doctor will indicate the strength you need.

Surgery On occasion, surgery may be needed prior to starting sclerotherapy. Our doctor will explain and make arrangements for it if it is indicated in your treatment.

WHAT ARE THE PAYMENT OPTIONS?

The number of visits needed for your treatment can only be determined by the doctor after your initial examination. At this time, it will also be determined if your treatments will be medical or cosmetic.

If you have a cosmetic problem, the cost is covered entirely by each individual.* In many cases, your private insurance company will cover all or part of the cost of the medications. Any portion not covered by AHC or your private insurance company can be claimed on your personal income tax form.

Tenser bandages or Elastoplast wrapping may be required during the course of your treatment. These are available and may be purchased at this office.* Compression hose are recommended after treatment to enhance the effectiveness of sclerotherapy.

You may pay by cash, cheque, Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Interac. Patients on welfare and senior citizens (aged 65 or more) are given special consideration.*

*Please refer to our fee schedule.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR BEST RESULTS

  • DO NOT apply oil or cream to your legs for 24 hours before your treatment (our tapes will not stick).

  • DO NOT shave or wax your legs 24 hours before treatment (it will sensitize your skin)

  • DO NOT suntan 24 hours before and 48 hours after your treatment (and always avoid sunburn).

  • DO NOT take excessively hot baths or whirlpools (it will dilate your veins).

  • DO NOT wear girdles or constrictive clothing (they will impair your circulation).

  • DO NOT wear support hose immediately before your treatment, wear them after.

  • DO continue your routine as usual after your treatment, simply emphasize your exercise (walking, swimming, aerobics).

  • DO watch your weight.

  • DO wear support stockings as often as possible.

  • DO wear low-healed shoes, especially if standing for long periods. High heels impair the venous return from your feet.
