ACTION OF GRADUATED COMPRESSION STOCKINGS

In varicose disorders, the pressure within the superficial veins of the leg is abnormally high and may produce complications such as swelling (edema), eczema, pigmentation, or even a varicose ulcer.

The main purpose of graduated compression stockings is to reduce pressure within the superficial venous system in the leg. The graduated compression stockings exert greater pressure on the lower portion of the leg and thereby help the venous return to flow towards the upper portion. This assists the veins, facilitates the flow and retards varicose and spider vein formation.

In addition, symptoms associated with varicose and spider veins (swelling, heaviness, discomfort and fatigue in the leg) are reduced or even completely relieved.

WALK, AND DOUBLE THE EFFECT !

Any physical activity, including walking, is a wonderful way to exercise the muscles in the calf. These muscles contract, compress the veins in the deep venous system, and force the blood upwards.

Remember that because of gravity the veins in the lower limbs are at a disadvantage.

The arteries have their own pump, the heart, which functions automatically, day and night, moreover, gravity gives them a helping hand.

The veins, on the contrary, have only the leg muscles, which must be activated to function, and in addition, the veins have gravity to work against them.

WHAT KIND OF STOCKINGS?

There are all kinds of stockings available, and it is always possible to find a pair to suit even the most difficult cases. Most graduated compression stockings are mass-produced and are affordable. However, special cases require custom-made stockings, and they are more expensive.

There are compression knee-high stockings and pantyhose in a wide range of colours. It is possible to wear compression stockings that look as beautiful as any stocking that can be bought in the hosiery department of fine stores. Dress, athletic and casual socks in a variety of styles and colors are also available. They offer support, comfort and help reduce fatigue.

The compression exerted by support stockings varies (see table). Your doctor will prescribe the correct compression for your specific needs. Do not hesitate to inform him (or her) of your preferences and reticences because YOU are the one who will be wearing them!

HOW SHOULD YOU WEAR THEM?

For best results, compression stockings should be worn from dawn till dusk, all day long every day. They should be put on in the morning before you get out of bed. If you have left your bed without putting the stockings on, go back and lie down for a few minutes with your legs up and wiggle your toes to empty the veins. Remain in this position and pull on your stockings.

If in the beginning the stockings feel too tight, wear them progressively: that is, for one hour on the first day, two hours on the next day, and so on.

WHO SELLS THEM?

This product is available from Calgary Vein & Laser. There are different brands to choose from. A certified fitter will help find the brand that fits you the best. It is wise to try them on before buying them. They should be bought in the morning when your legs are least swollen. Do not buy more than one pair the first time to make sure that your choice is the right one for your needs.

CARE OF YOUR STOCKINGS

Compression stockings should be washed by hand in cool water with a mild soap. Wring them gently in a towel and avoid stretching them. Let them dry in the open air away from sources of heat and NEVER put them in the dryer!

SOME MISCONCEPTIONS

Compression stockings do NOT interfere with blood circulation; on the contrary, they assist venous circulation in the legs.

Compression stockings do NOT weaken the muscles in the leg. Energetic walking will provide firm muscular tonicity

Lastly, remember that wearing compression stockings is not a "must" but a choice.  For instance, if the atmosphere (weather) is unbearably warm and you decide not to wear support hose, you will not endanger your health; compensate for this with additional exercise.
